Random and useless personal thoughts on things that have nothing to do with nobody, like kendo, iaido and the like

Soon...

Not this week, since I've got plenty of belated stuff to catch up (have to finish a text, a translation, two reviews and reply to several e-mails, just to name a few), but I guess next week I will be able to post more stuff in this (almost abandoned) blog :D

I guess I will translate the "Kenjutsu Giron", one of the writings I list in a previous post. Do not expect anything deep or spiritual, since it is a writing meant for BEGINNERS (like this lowly self!). But I guess it's interesting to see that not every Japanese writing is arcane nor deals with esoteric stuff. There are some remarks that are particularly good, IMHO.

As I said before, I will post the translation in Portuguese. Perhaps I will put also a rough draft in English, but my comments will be entirely in Portuguese. :P

And sometimes I wonder how people can write so much in a blog, and so often. Can't deny that posting sometimes is fun, but this isn't a thing that can be addictive for me, that for sure...

Bibliography - Part 5

Just a not-so-quick update, since I have to finish a text till Friday and I am running out of time... and couldn't help but notice that it's been a long time since I've last posted here :D

As I said in a previous post, I bought one of the books of Yamada Jirokichi. For those who don't know who he was, he was the 15th Soke (representative) of the Jiki Shinkage ryu. He has written five books that contain many old and new writings on kendo/iaido, besides a sixth book on the Jiki Shinkage ryu (actually, the correct name seems to be Kashima Shinden Jiki Shinkage ryu). Among them, I got only one, the (Shinshin Shuyo) Kendo Sosho - the "Compilation of Writings on the Path of the Sword (for the development of the body and mind)". It comprises 10 writings, some of them already listed before in this blog.

Here is the list.

1- "Heiho Michishirube" ("Milestones of the Laws of the Soldier"), Shirai Tooru
Shirai Tooru was a swordsman from the late Edo Era. He was invincible in shiai, but after losing to Terada sensei, he started from the scratch again and attained enlightenment.

2- "Rigakusho" ("Summaries of the Study of the Precepts"), unknown author
I have *no* idea what this is about, though the topics listed in the index seem to be very interesting.

3- "Geijutsu Manbyoen" ("Medicine for every Disease in the Arts"), Hirabayashi (I can't read the rest of his name!)
I need to take this, methinks :D I took a look at it but I gave up when I saw plenty of stuff in sanskrit, though :D (written in Japanese characters, NOT in devanagari)

4- "Kendo Shushindan" ("Talks on the Learning of Kendo"), unknown author
No comments on this one.

5- "Geijutsu Tai-i" ("The Great Goal of the Art"), Kumazawa Ryosuke
No comments on this one too.

6- "Neko no Myojutsu" ("The Supreme Technique of the Cat"), in possession of Yamaoka Tesshu
Featured in a previous post.

7- "Kenjutsu Giron" ("A Just Discussion on the Sword Arts"), Hosono Kansuke
Featured in a previous post too.

8- "Kendosho" ("Writing on Kendo"), Iizasa Choisai
If this was really written by Iizasa Choisai Iga-no-kami Ienao, the founder of the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu, then it is most certainly the oldest writing I have.

9- "Yo ga Ikkan" ("My One Chapter"), Wada Heisuke
No idea about this one.

10- "Sonshi Jikatsusho" ("Summary of a Effective Use of Sun Tzu's teachings"), Son Yokken
I guess the title explains quite well the content of this writing.

I haven't read this book yet, so I can't really tell if it's good or not. It seems very good, though. And very, very hard, since this is very old... :( (the book itself is from 1936).
